Obituary:
The Curtis, Bracewell, Lee and Sirleaf families sadly announce the untimely passing of our husband, father, brother, nephew, uncle, grandfather, cousin and friend, the Honorable George "Billy" Varney Curtis, Sr., former Mayor of the City of Brewerville. He was predeceased by his parents, the Hon. Alfred B. Curtis, Sr. and Amanda Bracewell Curtis.
Born in the City of Brewerville, Montserrado County, Liberia, the Hon. Curtis spent almost forty years of his life as an integral part of the Liberian community in Staten Island, New York. While residing in the U.S., Billy raised his family, was a founding member and senior deacon of the First United Christian Church and was ultimately elected as President of the Staten Island Liberian Community Association (SILCA) for two consecutive terms. During his leadership, SILCA achieved recognition as a nonprofit (501c3), providing much needed support and services to the diaspora, including its very first food pantry and literacy program.
Upon his return to Liberia in 2010, Billy was appointed Mayor of the City of Brewerville in 2012, a position he held until 2018. While serving in this capacity, he modernized the Brewerville City Hall by erecting an annex to the municipal complex, brought its first ambulance service to the City and negotiated for the presence of onsite banking  services for its residents. Among other noteworthy accomplishments, the Hon. Curtis ran for the House of Representatives from District 17, Montserrado County and through his extensive network, was able to secure much needed medical supplies for the community at large.
The Hon. Curtis was an entrepreneur and philanthropist.  He was the Chief Executive Officer of the Crystal Ball Room in Brewerville, CEO of the Life FM radio station, founder of the ABC Foundation and a staunch member of the Burns Phelps United Methodist Church.
Hon. George "Billy" Varney Curtis, Sr. is survived by his loving wife, Danlette Belinda Curtis; children: Quita Lillian, Georgette Billie Kamara (Momo), Willette Satta, and George Varney Jr. He is also survived by his siblings, Ralph (Jamesetta), Brenda, Hon. Dr. A. Boima, Jr. (Dr. Aurelia), Verlene Torchiano (Anthony), Edwin (Kpanah), Lafayette, Tony, Alvin B. Curtis (Juludee), T-Amanda, Amelia and Jacqueline; sister-in-law, Rev. Miatta Teasley and brother-in-law, Azariah Sirleaf. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of family and friends.
